How to Prepare Your Home for Showings and Open Houses

Showings and open houses are your home's moment to shine. Proper preparation can be the difference between an offer and a pass. Here's my checklist for show-ready homes.

The Night Before Checklist

  • Do a thorough cleaning — vacuum, dust, wipe counters
  • Take out all garbage and recycling
  • Fluff pillows and arrange throws
  • Set dining tables with simple place settings
  • Turn on all lights and replace any burnt bulbs

The Day Of

  • Open all blinds and curtains
  • Light scented candles or use subtle air fresheners
  • Set temperature to comfortable 20-21°C
  • Put away pet items and take pets with you
  • Leave fresh flowers or a bowl of fruit in the kitchen
  • Play soft background music

What to Leave Out (and What to Put Away)

Leave out: Current magazines, coffee table books, fresh flowers, fruit bowls, plush towels

Put away: Mail and paperwork, personal photos, medications, valuables, pet items, laundry
